Naperville Holiday Lights 2026: First Nights & Dates

Naperville holiday lights switch on tomorrow — Monday, November 2, around 5 p.m. — but this year the season arrives in stages, and the parade that used to open it is gone. Here is the order everything actually happens in.

The Naperville holiday lights season used to start with one big night. In 2026 it starts with three smaller ones, spread across November: downtown’s trees and rooftops glow first, the one true lighting ceremony happens two weeks later at Naper Settlement, and the season’s biggest display — the free NaperLights walk — waits until Thanksgiving. Knowing which night is which saves you a trip downtown for a ceremony that doesn’t exist, and keeps you from missing the one that does. Everything below is checked against the organizers and local listings today; our Christmas in Naperville guide tracks the full season from here.

Stage one: downtown lights up Monday, Nov. 2 — no ceremony

Downtown Lights Up for the Holidays — Mon. Nov. 2, from about 5 p.m.

On Monday evening, the trees and rooftops across downtown Naperville begin to illuminate, starting around 5 p.m. — the first evening after the clocks fall back, so it gets dark early enough to enjoy it on a weeknight. There is deliberately no formal lighting ceremony: the lights come on gradually, and from Monday on they will be lit every night through the season for shopping and strolling.

Monday, Nov. 2 · from ~5:00 p.m. · Downtown Naperville · Free · no ceremony — lights fade on gradually

Because there is no countdown moment, Monday is a stroll, not an event: come for an early dinner or a hot drink and watch downtown change color as it gets dark. The first big shopping weekend under the new lights follows two weeks later — the downtown Holiday Open House Weekend runs Saturday, November 14 and Sunday, November 15.

Stage two: the one real ceremony — Naper Settlement, Wed. Nov. 18

Holiday Tree Lighting & Visits with Santa — Wed. Nov. 18, 5:00–7:00 p.m.

If your family wants the gathered-crowd, lights-come-on-all-at-once moment, this is it. Naper Settlement lights up its historic buildings and grounds for the season, with hot drinks, cookies, and visits with Santa. The listings describe it as free with registration — register ahead on the Settlement’s site rather than just showing up.

Wednesday, Nov. 18 · 5:00–7:00 p.m. · ceremony promptly at 5:15 p.m. · Naper Settlement, 523 S. Webster St. · Free with registration

Be on time for this one: the ceremony itself starts promptly at 5:15 p.m., and the refreshments and Santa visits fill the rest of the two hours. It is a school-night-friendly evening — home by 7 — which is exactly why it will be popular with younger kids.

Stage three: NaperLights, the big free walk, from Thanksgiving

NaperLights — Thanksgiving (Thu. Nov. 26) through New Year, 4:00–10:00 p.m. daily

The season’s headline display is the Naperville Sunrise Rotary’s free walk-through show along Water Street, Foyo Plaza, Jaycees Park, and the Naperville Riverwalk — lights and sound you stroll through rather than drive past. Pick up the free 3D viewing glasses at the event, and watch the organizer’s page for Santa appearances and special-event nights. It is a gift to the community; funds raised support youth and families locally and internationally.

Thu. Nov. 26 – New Year · 4:00–10:00 p.m. daily · Water Street & the Riverwalk · Free

Two honest planning notes. First, NaperLights does not start when downtown’s lights do — neighbors who go looking for the full animated display in early November will find the downtown trees lit but the Water Street show still weeks away. Second, the region’s ticketed light show runs on a different clock again: Illumination at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle opens November 14, and the Naperville Trolley’s holiday light tours roll from late November. The Naperville events calendar keeps all of it in one list.

What’s missing this year: the Parade of Lights is canceled

The Friday-night-after-Thanksgiving kickoff is not happening. The Rotary Club of Naperville has canceled the 2026 Holiday Parade of Lights — a downtown tradition for more than two decades — telling the city the production cost had outgrown the event’s financial return, according to the Naperville Sun. The club gave back the $22,300 it was set to receive through the city’s Special Events and Community Arts Commission, and the parade’s own website has not been updated for 2026.

So ignore the event-aggregator pages still listing the parade with “2026 dates TBA” — they are stale. What fills the Black Friday slot instead is smaller and walkable: Downtown Holiday Glow on Friday, November 27, 3:00–6:00 p.m., with roaming performers, face painters, and free hot chocolate and giveaways while supplies last — and around 5 p.m., Santa makes a drive-through appearance downtown in his red pickup truck, sleigh not yet ready. Then the parade comes to you: Santa’s Sleigh Tour runs Saturday, November 28 through Thursday, December 3, one float visiting 80-plus neighborhoods over six nights, now in its seventh year — check the route map for your street’s night.

Frequently asked questions

When do the Naperville holiday lights turn on in 2026?

Downtown’s trees and rooftops light up first, on Monday, November 2, starting around 5 p.m., and stay lit nightly. Naper Settlement holds its tree lighting on Wednesday, November 18, and the NaperLights display runs from Thanksgiving, November 26, through New Year.

Is there a downtown Naperville tree-lighting ceremony?

Not downtown — the November 2 switch-on has no ceremony, and the lights come on gradually from about 5 p.m. The ceremony this year is at Naper Settlement on Wednesday, November 18: the lighting happens promptly at 5:15 p.m., with hot drinks, cookies, and Santa visits from 5 to 7 p.m.

Is NaperLights free?

Yes. NaperLights is a free walk-through display presented by the Naperville Sunrise Rotary along Water Street, Foyo Plaza, Jaycees Park, and the Riverwalk, open 4–10 p.m. daily from Thanksgiving through New Year. Free 3D viewing glasses are handed out at the event.

Is the Naperville Parade of Lights happening in 2026?

No. The Rotary Club of Naperville canceled the 2026 Holiday Parade of Lights, citing the cost of producing it, the Naperville Sun reported. Listings showing it with dates “to be announced” are out of date. Downtown Holiday Glow (Fri. Nov. 27, 3–6 p.m.) and Santa’s Sleigh Tour (Nov. 28–Dec. 3) fill the gap.

Where are the best Christmas lights in Naperville?

Start downtown: the tree and rooftop lights from November 2, then the NaperLights walk on Water Street and the Riverwalk from Thanksgiving. Add Naper Settlement’s lit historic grounds after its November 18 ceremony, and Illumination at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle for the big ticketed show.
