Naperville Pumpkin Smash 2026: Nov. 7, Free at Ron Ory
The jack-o’-lantern on your porch has one good Saturday left. The Park District’s Pumpkin Smash is back this year — Saturday, November 7, 9 a.m. to noon — after a year off for construction.

Halloween is over, and the Naperville Pumpkin Smash 2026 is the best use for the pumpkin still sitting on your porch. The Naperville Park District’s free composting event returns to the Ron Ory Community Garden Plots on Saturday, November 7 — it did not happen in 2025, when construction at the garden plots forced a cancellation and the district told residents the Smash was expected to return in 2026. It has. Your job this week is simple: don’t trash the pumpkin yet, and don’t let it collapse into porch soup before Saturday. We first flagged the date in our Halloween Day guide; here is the full plan now that the details are confirmed.
Naperville Pumpkin Smash 2026: time, place and cost
Pumpkin Smash — Sat. Nov. 7, 9:00 a.m.–12:00 noon
Bring your leftover pumpkins and jack-o’-lanterns to the Ron Ory Community Garden Plots. You weigh your pumpkin, then smash it yourself — or let a volunteer do the honors — and the remains are composted right into the garden plots instead of going to a landfill. The Park District’s own calendar lists the event as free, and no registration is involved: just show up inside the three-hour window.
The Smash is a Naperville fall staple with real tonnage behind it: in 2021, participants dropped off a record 22,416 pounds of pumpkins to be smashed and composted, and Park District releases describe pumpkins being smashed directly into the garden soil, where they add nutrients back instead of rotting in a landfill. Three hours is the whole window, though — this is not an all-day, drop-it-whenever event, and a pumpkin delivered at 12:30 p.m. is a pumpkin you are taking home again.
Before you load the car: what to take off the pumpkin
The compost only works if what goes into the soil is pumpkin and nothing else. SCARCE, the DuPage-based environmental nonprofit that coordinates Pumpkin Smash collections across the suburbs, asks you to strip your jack-o’-lantern down first:
- Remove candles and any metal — the Naperville listings repeat this one, and it is the step people forget.
- Pull off googly eyes, plastic ears and noses, and any other plastic decorations.
- Peel off sticker decorations, and remove yarn and ribbons.
- Painted pumpkins are fine: SCARCE advises that acrylic paint won’t interfere with the composting process.
Do that five-minute cleanup at home, not in the parking lot, and Saturday morning is a weigh-in, a smash, and done. It is also a good weekend to finish the rest of the fall cleanup: the city’s second bulk leaf-collection cycle starts today, and free bagged leaf pickup runs from November 2 through December 11 — dates and rules are in our Naperville leaf collection guide.
Can’t make the Naperville pumpkin smash window? Two backup sites
If Saturday morning at Ron Ory doesn’t work — a game, a shift, a pumpkin that gives up early — two nearby SCARCE Smash sites run the exact same hours that day:
Villa Park Pumpkin Smash — Sat. Nov. 7, 9:00 a.m.–12:00 noon
Go Green Villa Park hosts its community Pumpkin Smash at VFW Post 2801, sponsored by SCARCE with support from the Villa Park VFW and LRS. Same idea: leftover pumpkins become compostable material instead of landfill waste.
Elmhurst Pumpkin Smash — Sat. Nov. 7, 9:00 a.m.–noon
The City of Elmhurst hosts a SCARCE drop-off at its Public Works Facility. Elmhurst is one of the two towns where SCARCE’s pumpkin collections began in 2014, so this site runs like a machine — the Elmhurst coalition even suggests collecting your neighbors’ pumpkins and delivering a carload.
The scale explains why every suburb wants a site: what started in 2014 with Wheaton and Elmhurst diverting 9.31 tons had grown by 2025 to more than 125 sites composting over 200 tons of pumpkins — 400,393 pounds — in a single season, according to SCARCE figures shared by the Elmhurst Cool Cities Coalition. Naperville’s version has the neatest ending of any of them: your jack-o’-lantern feeds the garden plots it is smashed into. The Naperville events calendar has the rest of the week once the porch is clear.
Frequently asked questions
When is the Naperville Pumpkin Smash in 2026?
Saturday, November 7, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the Ron Ory Community Garden Plots, 811 S. West St. The event returns after a one-year break — construction at the garden plots canceled the 2025 Smash.
Is the Naperville Pumpkin Smash free?
Yes. The Naperville Park District’s calendar lists the Pumpkin Smash as free, and there is no ticket or registration — bring your pumpkins during the 9 a.m.–noon window, weigh them, and smash them yourself or let a volunteer do it.
What should I remove from my pumpkin before the Pumpkin Smash?
Take out candles and anything metal, and remove googly eyes, plastic decorations, stickers, yarn, and ribbons — the goal is to compost just the pumpkin. Acrylic paint is the exception: SCARCE says it won’t interfere with composting, so painted pumpkins are welcome as they are.
Where is the Ron Ory Community Garden Plots?
The Ron Ory Community Garden Plots are at 811 S. West Street in Naperville, per Naperville Park District releases. That is where the Pumpkin Smash is held — the smashed pumpkins are composted directly into the garden soil there.
What if I can’t make it to Naperville on Saturday morning?
Two SCARCE-coordinated sites run the same Saturday, November 7 hours, 9 a.m. to noon: Villa Park, at VFW Post 2801, 39 E. St. Charles Road, and Elmhurst, at the Public Works Facility, 985 S. Riverside Drive. SCARCE’s full map of collection sites is at scarce.org/pumpkins.
