Naperville Leaf Collection 2026: Dates & Rules

Naperville leaf collection 2026 starts Monday, Oct. 19 — and the first rake-out deadline is 6 a.m. that morning. Here are all three cycle dates, how the free bagged program works, and the mistakes that get piles skipped.

If your maples are already dropping, this weekend is the one to get ahead of. The city runs two separate leaf programs this fall: bulk curbside pickup, where you rake loose leaves into the street, and a free bagged program that starts a couple of weeks later. They have different dates, different rules, and different deadlines — mixing them up is how leaves end up sitting at the curb until December. This guide keeps them straight, checked against the city's own pages today.

Naperville leaf collection 2026: the three curbside cycles

Cycle 1 — begins Monday, Oct. 19

Rake leaves into the street, next to the curb in front of your house, by 6 a.m. on Oct. 19. Crews make one pass in front of each home sometime during the roughly two-week cycle — there is no guaranteed day, and your street may not be reached until near the end of the cycle.

Cycle 2 — begins Monday, Nov. 2

Same drill: leaves out by 6 a.m. on the first day. Nov. 2 is also the day the free bagged program starts (below), so from this week on you have two ways to clear leaves at once.

Cycle 3 — begins Monday, Nov. 16; program ends Nov. 25

The final cycle is the tightest one. The whole bulk program wraps up Wednesday, Nov. 25, so anything still on the lawn after that has to go out bagged. The city specifically asks residents to rake during every cycle — even a small pile — instead of saving everything for the last pass, when bad weather is most likely.

How to rake for curbside leaf pickup in Naperville

Weather is the wild card every year. Snow, rain, or freezing temperatures can delay the program — or end it early — because the same trucks and equipment shift to de-icing and plowing. If that happens, the city directs residents to finish the job through the weekly bagged yard waste program instead.

The free bagged leaf program: Nov. 2 to Dec. 11

From Monday, Nov. 2 through Friday, Dec. 11, 2026, bagged leaves and yard waste are collected free — no sticker needed. Use 32-gallon paper yard waste bags, or clearly labeled 32-gallon cans or two-wheeled carts, set them out by 6 a.m. on your regular trash day, and keep each bag under 60 pounds. Wet leaves are heavier than they look, so don't pack bags to the brim after a rain.

Two exceptions are worth knowing before Nov. 2 rolls around. First, until the free window opens, every bag, can, or bundle set out needs a yard waste sticker — $2.75 each in 2026, sold at the Finance Department in the Naperville Municipal Center (400 S. Eagle St.) and at local grocery and hardware stores. Second, bundled branches need a sticker at all times, even during the free window. All yard waste collection for the year ends Dec. 11 and resumes March 15, 2027 — a date to pair with our winterize your Naperville home checklist if you're doing fall jobs in one sweep.

Skip the curb entirely: mulch or compost

The city is unusually direct about this: curbside pickup was never designed to haul away every leaf on your property, and the healthiest option for your yard is to keep some of them. Run the mower's mulching setting over fallen leaves and let the shreds feed the lawn, rake leaves into garden beds as winter cover, or chop and compost them into leaf mold for spring. Burning leaves, by contrast, is not allowed inside city limits. If you'd rather enjoy the color than rake it, our fall foliage guide to Naperville's best color spots is timed for this week's peak — and the Naperville landscapers guide is there if you'd rather hire the raking out.

FAQ

When does Naperville leaf collection start in 2026?

Monday, Oct. 19, 2026. Rake leaves into the street next to the curb by 6 a.m. that day. Two more cycles begin Nov. 2 and Nov. 16, and the bulk program concludes Nov. 25.

How many times will the city collect leaves on my street?

Once per cycle — three passes total across the season, weather permitting. Crews need roughly two weeks to work through the whole city each cycle, and the city can't guarantee a specific collection day.

When is free bagged leaf pickup in Naperville?

Nov. 2 through Dec. 11, 2026. During that window, leaves and yard waste in 32-gallon paper bags or clearly labeled cans or carts are collected free on your regular trash day. Before Nov. 2, a $2.75 yard waste sticker is required on each bag, can, or bundle — and bundled branches always need one.

What happens if it snows before my leaves are collected?

Snow, rain, or freezing weather can delay or permanently halt curbside collection, because the same 22 city trucks handle both leaf collection and snow operations. Any leaves left after an early end to the program should go out through the free bagged program, which runs through Dec. 11.

Can I burn leaves in Naperville?

No. Leaf burning is not permitted within city limits. Mulch, compost, use the curbside cycles, or use the bagged programs instead.
