Free Things to Do in Naperville This Week (Oct 12–18)
Free things to do in Naperville are easy to find if you know where the public calendar hides them. This week: a stack of free library programs, a half marathon you can watch from the Riverwalk, peak fall color, and a city pickup program that costs you nothing.
By Naperville Guide · Published October 11, 2026
Naperville runs on public institutions — the library system, the park district, the city itself — and all three are quietly generous this week. Every item below is genuinely free (no asterisk deals, no "first one free"), verified against the organizer's own listings today.
Free this week at the Naperville Public Library
The library's fall programming is in full swing across all three branches, and every program below is free — that's the whole point of the public library. Hours this week: Monday–Friday 9 a.m.–9 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.–5 p.m., Sunday 1–9 p.m. (Nichols and 95th Street; Naper Blvd. closes at 5 p.m. on Sundays).
Thursday, October 15
Pokémon Club, 6:00–7:30 p.m. — Naper Blvd. Library, 2035 S. Naper Blvd. Bring the binder, trade, play, repeat. Book and Cookie Club, 7:00–8:00 p.m. — Nichols Library, 200 W. Jefferson Ave. A book club for kids that comes with a cookie.
Friday, October 16 — storytime morning + two evening picks

Saturday, October 17
Naperville Plays, 9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. at the 95th Street Library — an open play morning for kids — plus Celebration Storytime, 10:30–11:00 a.m. at Nichols Library.
Watch the Naperville half marathon for free on Sunday
Endeavor Health Naperville Half Marathon, 10K & 5K
Running costs $55–$115, but watching costs nothing: the race starts and finishes around downtown Naperville and the Riverwalk on Sunday, October 18, at 7 a.m., and the course runs through downtown streets and neighborhood paths — pick a spot along the Riverwalk, grab coffee, and cheer. It's one of the Midwest's bigger fall endurance events, and the 7 a.m. start means you can be done spectating by mid-morning.
Always-free favorites, at their best right now
Mid-October is peak week for the western suburbs' scenery — the maples are flaming and the oaks are starting. Our fall foliage guide has the full list, but the free highlights this week:
- The Riverwalk — a mile and three-quarters of free riverfront strolling, at its prettiest this week with the color on. Free, always.
- Greene Valley Scenic Overlook — the 190-foot overlook over DuPage County's fall canopy. Weekends only through late October, 11 a.m.–6 p.m., free.
- Knoch Knolls Park (336 Knoch Knolls Rd) — 260 acres of woodland trails along the DuPage River plus a free 18-hole disc golf course under the color.
A free city perk that starts this week
Bulk curbside leaf collection begins Monday, October 19
Naperville's free leaf program gives every neighborhood three curbside collections: rake your leaves into the street next to the curb by 6 a.m. on the first day of each cycle — cycles start Oct 19, Nov 2, and Nov 16. Track your street's progress on the city's interactive map at naperville.il.us/leafcollection. The city also collects bagged leaves for free, and mulching or composting the rest is the cheapest option of all. (If you're prepping the yard for winter, our winterizing checklist pairs well.)
Practical tips
- Library parking: Nichols Library is downtown — the Jefferson Street and Van Buren decks work fine on weekend mornings. 95th Street and Naper Blvd. have surface lots.
- Half marathon road closures: expect downtown and neighborhood street closures Sunday morning; if you're not spectating, plan errands for after noon.
- Greene Valley overlook: weekend-only and weather-dependent — a quick check of the forest preserve district's site before driving out saves a wasted trip.
- Leaf piles: the city asks you to keep leaves away from storm drains and never bury branches, twigs, or rocks in the piles — debris breaks the collection equipment and delays your street's cycle.
