October 31 lands on a Saturday in 2026, which means Naperville gets the best possible Halloween: a full weekend of organized events, then the real thing on neighborhood doorsteps. The action clusters October 16–25, so mark the calendar now — and the rest of October's lineup is in our October events guide.
When is trick-or-treating in Naperville?
Here's the thing most national roundups get wrong: Naperville does not set official trick-or-treat hours. There is no city ordinance designating times, so the night runs on neighborhood rhythm. Local convention is mid-afternoon through the evening — younger kids tend to go out in daylight, and most streets wind down around 7–8 PM.
Practical rule: if the porch light is on, knock. If it's dark, skip the house. Saturday timing means traffic will be heavier than usual — keep kids on the sidewalk side and drivers, please, slow down on residential streets after 3 PM.
The big weekend: October 24–25
Downtown Halloween Hop
Dozens of downtown Naperville businesses open early and hand out Halloween surprises, and the Naperville Trolley runs complimentary rides. Parts of Jefferson and Main Streets close to vehicles, but the downtown parking decks stay open.
Halloween Happening — Naperville Park District
The park district's flagship free Halloween fest for kids 10 and under: games, activities, inflatables, treats, hayrides, and a pumpkin patch at the Riverwalk Grand Pavilion. Costumes must be family-friendly — no masks that block vision, no realistic weapon props.
Family Spooktacular — Naper Settlement
A brand-new family Halloween event this year: trick-or-treating through the historic homes, a costume contest, slime-making, inflatables, laser tag, and Disney-favorites performances. The not-so-scary option for families with little kids.
Howlin' at the Moon (21+) — Naper Settlement
The adults-only Halloween bash: live music on an outdoor stage (Birkenrocks and Six Foot Blonde Friday, Mr. Blotto and Neighbor Saturday), a costume contest, fire dancers, a Food Truck Graveyard, a BOOze Bar, and Halloween-themed art and photo experiences.
Rotary Hill Pumpkin Race
The city's special-events calendar lists the pumpkin race at Rotary Hill. Details are light as of this writing — check the park district site before heading over.
Earlier in the month
All Hallow's Eve — Naper Settlement
The settlement's annual haunted-history nights: eerie performances and spooky characters across the 13-acre grounds. This is the scarier of the two Naper Settlement Halloween events — recommended for ages 8 and up, and the family version (above) is the pick if you have younger kids.
Trick or Treat at Safety Town — Naperville Junior Woman's Club
A daytime trick-or-treat on the miniature town, with activity stations and local businesses handing out candy, toys, and coupons. A great rehearsal for first-time trick-or-treaters. The $15 family donation benefits Safety Town, and bring a non-perishable food item for Loaves & Fishes.
Pumpkin Palooza — DuPage Children's Museum
The children's museum's festive fall day for families: pumpkin-themed activities, scoop-and-squish play, costumes welcome. Check the museum site for whether it's included with regular admission.
Pumpkin patches before the big night
Carve early and you'll have a jack-o'-lantern ready for Saturday. Nearby options for the full fall-farm day: Sonny Acres Farm in West Chicago (a western-suburbs classic), Bengtson's Pumpkin Farm & Fall Fest in Homer Glen for the full theme-park treatment, Pumpkin Daze at Abbey Farms in Aurora, and Keller's Farmstand in Oswego for the low-key apple-and-pumpkin run. Johansen Farms in Bolingbrook (about 5 miles out) has a 25,000-pumpkin patch plus a corn maze — all of these were in our October guide with drive times.
Parent-tested tips
- Stack the weekend: Halloween Hop (10 AM–12 PM) flows right into Halloween Happening (1–4 PM) on Sunday Oct 25 — do both and Saturday night is free.
- Dress for real October: average lows dip into the 30s by Halloween week; layer the costume and do a driveway test for tripping.
- Visibility beats scariness: reflective tape or glow sticks on bags, a flashlight per kid, face paint over vision-blocking masks.
- Sort at home: have an adult inspect everything before anyone digs in; toss anything unwrapped or homemade.
- Need dinner between events? Our cheap eats guide has verified sub-$15 picks near downtown and the Riverwalk.
Good to know
What time does trick-or-treating start in Naperville on Halloween?
Naperville has no official trick-or-treat hours. Most neighborhoods see kids from mid-afternoon (around 3–4 PM) into the evening, with streets winding down around 7–8 PM. Follow your street's porch lights.
Where's the best trick-or-treating in Naperville?
Your own street is usually the best bet, but the homes north of Hobson Road and east of Washington Street have long been a local pick for high-participation streets. Downtown's Halloween Hop (Oct 25, free) is the organized alternative.
What's the difference between All Hallow's Eve and Family Spooktacular?
Both are at Naper Settlement in October. All Hallow's Eve (Oct 16–17) is the nighttime scare event, recommended for ages 8 and up. Family Spooktacular (Oct 24–25) is the new not-so-scary daytime version for families with younger kids.
What's free for little kids on Halloween weekend?
Both Sunday Oct 25 events are free: the downtown Halloween Hop (10 AM–12 PM) and the Park District's Halloween Happening at the Riverwalk Grand Pavilion (1–4 PM, ages 10 and under).
Where can I find events updated daily?
Our Naperville events page refreshes every morning, and the Aurora events page covers the neighboring scene.
