For nine years, Naperville kept its own ban on happy-hour drink specials even after Illinois brought them back statewide in 2015. That ended this fall: the Liquor Commission voted unanimously on August 6 to recommend lifting the ban, and the City Council voted unanimously on September 1 to lift it, according to the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce. Restaurants near the city border no longer have to watch happy-hour crowds drive to the next town over.
Illinois law still keeps happy hour on a short leash: discounted drinks max out at four hours a day and fifteen hours a week, nothing discounted after 10 PM, the price can't change mid-promotion, and the deal has to be posted at least seven days ahead. Two-for-ones and unlimited-drink offers are banned outright. Naperville's commission proposal would end discounted drinks by 7 PM — three hours earlier than the state cutoff — so expect most local happy hours to wrap by early evening. Food specials were never the restricted part, which is why the strongest deals below lead with what's on the plate.
Downtown: bites by the Riverwalk
1. Tapville Social — $5 Happy Hour Bites, Mon–Fri 3–6 PM
The cleanest deal downtown: a $5 Happy Hour Bites menu with eight shareable dishes, Monday through Friday from 3 to 6 PM, built for pairing with the self-pour tap wall. Wednesday is the double-dip — trivia runs 7–9 PM and beer and cider pours are 50% off all day Wednesday. Tuesdays bring $12 taco flights from 6 to 8:45 PM.
2. Blue Sushi Sake Grill — happy hour to 6:30 PM, all day Sunday
The Water Street spot runs the longest window on this list: Monday–Saturday from open to 6:30 PM, and all day Sunday (dine-in only on Sundays). Share plates start with steamed or charred edamame at $5.25, mango crab rangoon at $7.75, and shishito peppers and crispy Brussels sprouts at $8.75. Maki rolls start at $7 — the Cali Roll and shrimp tempura maki — with a house lime margarita at $8 and house wines at $6.75 on the same menu.
Freedom Drive & the north side
3. White Chocolate Grill — happy hour from 2 PM daily
Happy hour starts at 2 PM daily here, with bites starting at $7 and drinks from $9.50 cocktails, $9 wines by the glass, $7 draft beer, and $5 non-alcoholic beer, per its current listing. The happy-hour food menu is where the value sits: fresh-cut fries $2.99, chips and salsa $3.99, a plate of three sliders or pulled pork sliders at $6.99, hand-battered chicken strips $6.99, a four-piece shrimp cocktail $6.99, AZ egg rolls $7.99, and a half rack of BBQ ribs with fries for $8.99.
Route 59 & 95th Street
4. Draft Picks — select appetizers under $9, Mon–Fri 3–6 PM
The sports-bar play on Fairway Drive: happy hour Monday–Friday 3–6 PM with select appetizers listed at $7.95–$8.95 in recent listings — boneless wings, potato skins, fried pickle spears, saganaki, mini nachos, and a tater tot basket. It's the easiest pre-game or post-commute stop on the south side, and the kitchen runs late.
5. Houlihan's — $3.95 Happy Apps in the bar, lounge & patio
The cheapest entry on this list: $3.95 smaller portions of Houlihan's starters — loaded guacamole, chicken wings, avocado toast, organic spinach dip, chicken lettuce wraps, the stuffed 'shrooms, goat cheese and artichoke poppers, a BBQ carnitas slider, a mini Black Angus burger, parmesan frites, and spicy chicken avocado eggrolls. Listed hours are Monday–Thursday 3–7 PM with a late window after 9 PM, Saturday 1–4 PM, and all day Sunday, bar, lounge, and patio only. The late window is a food deal — under the new rules, discounted drinks can't run that late in Naperville.
How to work happy hour in Naperville now
- Go early. Between the state's 10 PM cutoff and Naperville's proposed 7 PM end for discounted drinks, the real action is 3–6 PM. Every deal above lives in that window.
- Order food first. Food specials carry no hour caps, so kitchens can deal harder on plates than on pours — $5 bites and $3.95 apps beat most drink discounts anyway.
- Stack a weekday bonus. Tapville's Wednesday half-off pours and Tuesday taco flights, and Blue Sushi's all-day Sunday, are the three best stacks in town right now.
- Confirm before you go. Happy-hour menus are new again in Naperville and still shifting as restaurants post their seven-day notices. Prices and hours below were read on October 4, 2026 — a quick check of the restaurant's own page saves a surprise.
Building a cheap night out? Pair a 3 PM happy hour with our cheap dinner under $15 list, start with the lunch under $10 list at midday, and check the Naperville events page for what's on after — a walk on the Riverwalk is still free.
